Report: Students’ Parliament on Union Budget 2026

The Students’ Parliament on the Union Budget 2026 was successfully organised by ECOSQUARE, the Economics Society of the Department of Economics, Shyam Lal College (Evening), on 12 February 2026. The inter-college competition provided an engaging platform for critical discussion, policy analysis, and informed debate on contemporary economic issues related to the Union Budget.

Students from several colleges of the University of Delhi, including Aurobindo College, Kirori Mal College, Shyam Lal College (Evening), and Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, participated with great enthusiasm. The event also witnessed participation from institutions such as Maharaja Surajmal Institute and Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies (VIPS), enriching the diversity of perspectives.

The programme commenced with a formal welcome address by the anchor, followed by a traditional Lamp Lighting Ceremony. The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Nachiketa Singh, Principal of Shyam Lal College (Evening), along with faculty members from various departments of the college. As a mark of respect and environmental consciousness, the dignitaries were felicitated with saplings. This was followed by an address by Principal Sir, who emphasized the importance of academic engagement with real-world economic policymaking.

The Students’ Parliament was conducted in three well-structured rounds aimed at assessing the participants’ analytical ability, subject knowledge, and communication skills:

Round I: Discussion Round (Opening Statements)

Participants were allotted two minutes each to present their initial viewpoints on the Union Budget, based on their assigned portfolios or roles.

Round II: Questionnaire Round

This ten-minute round involved active questioning and debate, where participants critically examined and challenged one another’s arguments, showcasing their depth of understanding and responsiveness.

Round III: Final Exchange and Response (Closing Statements)

Participants were given five minutes to prepare their responses to the arguments raised earlier and to deliver their concluding statements, along with feasible solutions and policy recommendations.

After a tough competition and careful deliberation by the judges, the winners were announced:

Overall, the event proved to be an intellectually stimulating experience, fostering critical thinking, informed dialogue, and a deeper understanding of fiscal policy among students.
