The Department of Economics at Shyam Lal College (Evening) was established in 1969, initially offering Economics as a subject within the B.A. Programme. In 1998, the department expanded its academic offerings to include the B.A. (Honours) in Economics.

The department comprises ten well qualified and committed faculty members, who bring with them a wealth of teaching and research experience across diverse areas of economics. Their collective expertise fosters a dynamic, inclusive, and intellectually vibrant academic environment conducive to critical inquiry and innovation.

The primary objective of the department is to provide students with a comprehensive and globally relevant education in economics. Emphasis is placed on nurturing analytical acumen, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and professional competencies required in an increasingly complex economic landscape.

The department employs a learner-centric and multidisciplinary pedagogical approach. Classroom instruction is complemented by the use of modern teaching aids, as well as interactive sessions including, seminars, expert lectures, group discussions, and educational excursions.
